Doris had done oil painting for her own enjoyment, and when her first book Haul the Water, Haul the Wood was getting ready for publication she wondered what she would use for the cover.   Then her mother suggested, "Why don't you make a painting for the cover yourself?"  So she did.  She also painted the cover for Ole's Promise.
